A committee of three people is to be selected from four women and five men. The rule states that there must be atleast one woman and one man in the committee. In how many ways can the committee be chosen? Subsequently one of the men and one of the women marry each other. The rules also state that a married couple may not both serve the committee. In how many ways can the committee be chosen now?

Given:

Committee of three people is to be selected from four women and five men

For this committee to have at least one man and one woman. This can happen in only two ways either one man and two women or two men and one woman

Thus required number of ways

Now if the committee has married couple, the third member can be any of the other 7 people

Hence, required number of ways = 70 – 7 = 63
