a compound forms hexagonal close packed structure. what is the total number of voids in 0.5mol of it? how many of these are tetrahedral voids?

Number of atoms in 1 mole of compound = 6.022 x 1023

Number of atoms in 0.5 mol = 0.5 x 6.022 x 1023

  = 3.011 x 1023

For a hexagonal closed packed structure,

Number of octahedral voids = number of atoms in the compound

Therefore, the number of octahedral voids =3.011 x 1023

And

Number of tetrahedral voids = 2 x octahedral voids

  = 2 x 3.011 x 1023

  = 6.022 x 1023

The total number of voids = (6.022 + 3.011) x 1023

  = 9.033 x 1023

6.022*10^23 tetrahedral voids & .5*6.022*10^23octahedral voids

1 mol contains 6.022 * 10^23 atoms...

so therefore

0.5 mol will contain 0.5 x 6.022 * 10^23 atoms

                                   = 3.011 * 10^23 atoms...

Now as we know that

hccp or ccp = No. 0f atoms = No. of octahedral voids..

So therefore No. of octahedral voids is equal to 3.011 x 10^23 voids...

Also..

No. of Tetrahedral voids = 2 x Octahedral voids

Hence , No. of octahedral voids = 2 x 3.022 x 10623 voids

                                                        = 6.022 x to623 voids..

Hope u r able to understand this....
