a doubt from the ncert textbook . please explain the yellow box of lesson 15 -some natural phenomena -
(ritcher scale is not linear ....an earthquake of magnitude 4 .....1000 times more if increased by 2 in the scale )please try to answer this by today!

Dear Student ,
The power of an earthquake is expressed in terms of a magnitude on a scale called Richter scale.
Like many other scales in science (decibel is another example), Richter scale is not linear. This means that an earthquake of magnitude 6 does not have one and
half times the destructive energy of an earthquake of magnitude 4. In fact, an increase of 2 in magnitude means 1000 times more destructive energy. For
example, an earthquake of magnitude 6 has thousand times more destructive energy than an earthquake of magnitude 4.

This paragraph only suggests that richer scale is not linear means with the increase in 2 numbers , destructive energy increases 1000 times not 2 times. In linear scale with the increase in 2 units , energy will only increase by 2 times but here it increases by 1000 times.
