a freely suspended magnet always comes at rest in the north-south direction. Give reason

This is because due to Terrestrial magnetism
Our earth can be considered as a huge magnet because of the substances present inside the earth which causes electric charge.Hence Earth is a huge conducting material.
Experimentally,it was determined that EARTH'S MAGNETIC NORTH IS LOCATED ALONG THE GEOGRAPHICAL SOUTH AND THE MAGNETIC SOUTH IS LOCATED ALONG THE GEOGRAPHICAL NORTH.
Therefore, when a bar magnet is freely suspended in space, the north pole of magnet gets attracted towards magnetic south of earth which is actually north pole of earth.
And the south pole of the magnet is attracted towards magnetic north of earth which is actually geographical south.
Once, the magnet attains the pole positions,it comes to rest.
