A jet aircraft is flying at an altitude of 9000 m . What will be the pressure of air around it? Please explain units also.

The variation of pressure with height is given by the following exponential relation

P = P0e(-H/7990)

here,

P0 = pressure at sea level = 760mm of Hg

H = height = 9000m

P = pressure at height H

so,

P = 760 x e(-9000/7990)

or

= 760 x e-1.125

thus, pressure at a height of 9000m will be

P = 246 mm of Hg
