a man fires a shot and hears an echo from a cliff after 2 sec. he walks 85m towards the cliff and the echo of the 2nd shot is now heard after 1.4sec. what is the velocity of sound and how far was the man from the cliff when he heard the eco first?

 S = 2D / T = 2 * 85 / ( 2 - 1.4 ) = 283.333...

NOW TOTAL DISTANCE = S * T / 2 = 283.333... * 2 / 2 = 283.333... METRES

Formula of Echo: 2d=v*t
v=2d/t
v=2*85/(2-1.4)
v=170/0.6=283.3 m/s......(or 283.3 m/s approx)
Now to find the distance,
2d=v*t
We now know the value of 'v'. So,
2d=283.3*0.6
2d=169.98
Therefore d=169.98/2

d=84.99 m

Let x be total distance between man and hill
v be velocity of sound
so v=2x/5
second case
distance is 2(x-340)
so v=2(x-340)/3
since velocity of sound doesn't change
2x/5=2(x-340)/3
x=850 m
v=340m/s
