A mixture contains only Iodine , Ammonium chloride and sand. Only Iodine and nAmmonium chloride sublime. Only Iodine dissolves in carbon tetra chloride.

How will you seperate the three components? Sequence of steps will be

a) By sublimation addition of CCl4

b) Addition of CCl4 , filtration, sublimation

c) Sublimation, addition of H2O, filtration.

d) evaporation, distillation, crystalization

The correct answer is b) Addition of CCl4 , filtration, sublimation

As iodine dissolves in CCl4, it is filtered, separated and evaporated. Iodine crystals are collected separately. Now remaining are sand and ammonium chloride in the mixture. Ammonium chloride changes directly from solid to gaseous state on heating (sublimation). The gaseous form of ammonium chloride can be cooled easily to get a pure solid. The remaining would be sand. Hence all the three iodine, ammonium chloride and sand are separated from mixture by above procedure.
