A narrow beam PQ of white light is passing through a glass prism ABC as shown in the diagram.
Trace it on your answer sheet and show the path of the emergent beam as observed on the screen DE.
1. Write the name and cause of the phenomenon observed.
2. Where else in nature is this phenomenon observed.
3. Based on this observation, state the conclusion which can be drawn about the constituents of white light.

Dear student,
1. This phenomena is called dispersion. The splitting of white light into its constituent colours is called dispersion.  Dispersion occurs because refraction or bending of light differs with the colour. The speed of light of light of different colours in a medium like glass, water etc. is different. It has been observed that the refractive index of glass for violet colour is more than that for  violet colour is more than that for red colour. The speed of light, however is same for
all colour in free space or vacuum.

2. rainbow is the example of dispersion of light.
3. The colour sequence is given by the acronym V I B G Y O R- violet, indigo, blue, and green, yellow,
orange and red. This colour pattern is called a spectrum.

dispersion of light and its cause is that different colours of white light having different wavelengths deviate through different angles on passing through a glass prism . rainbow is the best example of dispersion of sunlight in nature.when a beam of white light is passed through a glass prism ,it splits up into seven colours . this splitting of white light into its constituent colours is called dispersion of light.
