A narrow beam PQ of white light is passing through a glass prism ABC as shown in the diagram.

Trace it on your answer sheet and show the path of the emergent beam as observed on the screen DE.
(i) Write the name and cause of the phenomenon observed.
(ii) Where else in nature is this phenomenon observed ?
(iii) Based on this observation, state the conclusion which can be drawn about the constituents of white light.

1.The phenomenon is dispersion.
2.This phenomenon can be observed in the formation of rainbow.
3.Thru dis experiment we observe dat white light is made up of 7 constituents namely Violet, Indigo ,Blue ,Green ,Yellow ,Orange ,Red....
On cmpleting d diagrm we will observe dat d white light splits up into seven colours with d most deviated colour being Violet nd d least deviated being Red....The colours on the wall DE will form a band of seven colours called spectrum...Order of d colours is denoted by VIBGYOR...Hope dis helps....A thumbs up plzz...

The incident ray would then refract and also scatter on passing through the prism.

a) The phenomenon involved is dispersion of light. A light ray disperses to form seven colours. The cause of this is that the light is composed of different colours of different wavelenght.

b) In nature it is found in rainbows. In this case the ray of light is scattered into it's components by a small water droplet, which then combine to form a rainbow.

c) We can say that white light is a constituent of seven different colours. Each of them having different velocities.
