A plant requires magnesium for what???

Magnesium helps in photosynthesis. The chlorophyll molecules contain magnesium ions and a deficiency causes yellowing of leaves. It is also used in sugar synthesis, increase of iron utilisation and in starch translocation.

Magnesium is is one of the major constituent of the chlorophyll molecule. It acts as an activator for many enzymes in phosphate transfer reactions particularly in carbohydrate metabolism and nucleic acid synthesis. It is also believe to be an important binding agent in ribosomes, where protein synthesis takes place.

Magnesium defeciency causes extensive chlorosis of leaves and older leaves are affected first. Ultimately, leaves devolop necrotic spots.
