A position vector of a point is (2i+2j)m

a)find magnitude of this vector

b) find angle with x-axis

c) find the volume of cone which is generated when a line segment representing this position vector is rotated about x-axis with one end remaining fixed at origin.

ans soon i've test tmrw .This chapter is difficult for me to understand :(

Solution:

Here position vector =2i+2j (where i and j are unit vectors)

a) Magnitude of this vector

b)For the angle with x axis,

  • 3

a.  magnitude of the vector is given by =( A2+B2 )  1/2

                   magnitude of this vector = (22+22)1/2

                                                                =2 root 2

b.  angle or direction of a vector tan theta = 2/2

                                                                      =1    and hence theta =45 degree with the x axis

c.    height of cone can be taken as 2 since magnitude along y axis is 2

radius of the cone will be 2 as it is the magnitude along x axis  

vol. of the cone = 1/3 pi r2h

                           =1/3*22/7*2*2*2

                           =176/21 units
