A rectangular coil, ABCD is lying in the plane ofthe page as shown. A bar magnet, with its northpole pointing towards the page, is moved along adirection perpendicular to the plane of the page. What is the direction of the induced current in the

coil?

The current should be in such a direction that it opposes its cause. When we move the north pole of the magnet towards the coil, magnetic flux through the coil increases. If we look at the coil from the top an induced current in the anticlockwise direction will be seen. An anticlockwise current will produce a magnetic field opposite to the direction of the magnetic field due to the north pole of the magnet.
