A shell of mass 10kg moving with velocity 20m/s explodes in two parts of 6kg and 4 kg respectively. If the former is brought to rest after the explosion, find the velocity of the latter.
Total initial momentum= m x v =10 x 20 = 200 kg m/s → (1)
let v2 be the velocity of m = 4 kg. and velocity of m=6 kg is 0 m/s.
Total final momentum = (m1 x v1)+(m2 x v2) =
(6 x 0) +( 4 x v2) = 4 v2 →(2)
According to law of conservation of momentum, total initial momentum = total final momentum
Equating 1 and 2,
200 = 4v2
v2 = 50 m/s
let v2 be the velocity of m = 4 kg. and velocity of m=6 kg is 0 m/s.
Total final momentum = (m1 x v1)+(m2 x v2) =
(6 x 0) +( 4 x v2) = 4 v2 →(2)
According to law of conservation of momentum, total initial momentum = total final momentum
Equating 1 and 2,
200 = 4v2
v2 = 50 m/s
