A stretched spring can do work . Explain with the help of an activity

Dear student

When a force stretches an elastic string, the force does work and the string is given potential energy.
Suppose we stretch a string by applying a force. In doing this a work is done here and an energy is stored. It is because of change in its position.
Suppose the force applied on an elastic string is F . As the extension increases, the force must increase. At each stage the force must be equal and opposite to the tension.F=T=λxlSo, F α xNow, work done in stretching the string can be found by multiplying the average force by the distance moved in the direction of the force.Suppose the extension increases from 0 to x, the force increasees from 0 to λxl.So,Average force=0+λxl2=λx2l and distance moved=xThus, work done=λx2l×x=λx22l

Spring Potential Energy (Elastic Potential Energy) If you pull on a spring and stretch it, then you do work. That is because you are applying a force over a displacement. Your pull is the force and the amount that you stretch the spring is the displacement.
