A student fixes a sheet of white paper on a drawing board. He place a bar magnet at the centre of it. He sprinkles some iron filings uniformly around the bar magnet. Then he taps the board gently and observes that the iron filings arrange themselves in a particular pattern. a) Why do the iron filings arrange in a pattern? a. What is indicated by the crowding of iron filings at the end of the magnet?  b. What do the lines along which the iron filings align represent? c. Draw a neat diagram to show the magnetic field lines around a bar magnet. d. Write any two properties of magnetic field lines.

(d) Properties of the magnetic field lines :
(1)they can be drawn at any point on the field
(2)they are closed and continuous curves
(3)the direction of field line is from north pole to south pole outside the magnet and south to north pole inside the magnet
(4)the direction of magnetic field at any point on the field is obtained by drawing tangent at that point
(5)two field lines will never intersect.
