A substance X when heated gives rise to Y and Z. What kind of substance is X- Element or Compound ?

Ma'am it's urgent as tomorrow is my science exam.

If a substance X on heating gives two different substances Y and Z, then the substance is a compound and not an element. Both elements and compounds are pure substances. However, an element is composed of only one type of particles, while a compound consists of two or more atoms of different elements, combined in a fixed ratio by mass. For example carbon is an element composed of only carbon atoms while NaHCO3, CaCO3 are compounds composed of atoms of more that one element. Hence if we are obtaining two substances by heating substance X, it means that the X itself is composed of two different types of atoms. Thus X is a compound.

Hi,

  • Of course, it should be a compound
  • Since, an elemant cannot be separated by physical means, it should be a compound.

Hope this helps!!
