a} the surface area of the end of a brick is 50 cm square. it exertsa force of 50 N . What pressure is exerted on the ground by the brick ?

b} if the brick is replaced by a block of wood how would the pressure be affected ? Justify your answer.

it was not a problem to solve the a part but i'm confused for the b part. Please solve my query.

Given,

Surface area, A = 50 cm2 = 50 × 10-4 m2

Force exerted by the brick, F = 50 N

(a)

Pressure on the ground, P = F/A = 50/(50 × 10-4) = 104 N/m2

(b)

The pressure is dependent only on force and surface area on which force is exerted. It is not dependent on the type of material used.

So, if the block of wood and brick both have same surface area (surface area of the face touching the ground) and same weight then the pressure would be same.
