A train of mass 2000 quintal is drawn up on an inclined plane of 2 in 100 at the rate of 72 km/h. If the resistance due to friction is 3000 N, calculate the power of the engine.

The inclination of inclined plane = tanθ = θ = sinθ = 2/100.When train is pulled by the engine, following eqn is obtained under balancing condition,F = mg sinθ +FR. where F and FR are force of engine and frictional force.therefore  F = 200000×10×2100 + 3000.                  F  = 40000 + 3000 = 43000N.but velocity of train on the inclined plane = 72 Km/h =72×518= 20 m/s.Therefore power of the engine P = F×v.                    P =  43000×20 = 860000 W  =  860 KW.
