(a) Two conductors A and B of resistance 5ohm and 10ohm respectively are arranged in parallel and later on series. In each arrangement the voltage applied across it is 20V. In which arrangement will the voltage across A and B be the same and in which case the current flowing through A and B be the same?
(b) Calculate the total resistance for each arrangement.

Voltage across both the resistances will be same when they are connected in parallel.

Current through both the resistances will be same when they are connected in series.

When connected in series the equivalent resistance is Rs = 5 + 10 = 15 Ω

When connected in parallel the equivalent resistance is,

1/Rp = 1/5 + 1/10

=> Rp = 50/15 = 3.33 Ω

the current will  be same in series combination while voltage will be same in parellel combination

  1. the total resistancein the series

R=R1+R2

R=5+10=15ohm

2.the total resistance in paellel

1/R=1/R1+1/R2

1/R=1/5+1/10

1/R=(2+1)/10

1/R=3/10

R=10/3
