In Indiamuch of its forests and wildlife resources are either owned or manged by the government through Forest Department or other Government Departments

Government's Categorization of Forests:

(i) Reserved Forests:   . Reserved forests are regarded as the most valuable , in these forests and in these forest no human or commercail activity is permitted ,  They are also known as permanent forest they are mainly spread Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, uttrakhand etc.

(ii) Protected Forests:  O ne-third of the total forest area is protected forest and are prevented from further depletion. Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Odisha, HP have areas under protected forests.

(iii) Unclassed Forests:   These include forests and wastelands owned by government, private individuals and communities .North East states and parts of Gujarat have these forests under them.
