acetic acid was added to a solid 'X' kept in a test tube. A colorless, odourless gas 'Y' was evolved. The gas was passed through lime water, which turned milky. Solid 'X' was :-(a) Sodium Hydroxide 'Y' is CO2(b) Sodium Bicarbonate 'Y' is CO2(c) Sodium Acetate(d) Sodium Bicarbonate 'Y' is SO2.Give reason.

When acetic acid added to solid X , then odourless and colourless gas Y is evolved .
Compound X is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and Y gas is CO2 gas  . CO2 gas will turn lime water milky by the formation of CaCO3. The reaction is :
CH3COOH + NaHCO3 CH3COONa + CO2 + H2O

sodium bicarbonate

CO2

  • -1
(b) X-Sodium Carbonate and Y-CO2
  • -2
its option b as when sodium carbonate reacts with ethanoic acid(CH3COOH) . it liberates CO2 gas.
