Dear Student,
i. The primary sector or the agricultural sector constitutes the backbone of our economy, and the major sources of employment.
ii. However its contribution to national income is lowest .
iii. For GDP, the contribution of primary sector has been , 15% , ( 2012 data)
iv. This is because, primary sector faces disguised or underemployment , where more people are involved than actually required , making no significant contribution to the production. Small landholdings, lack of availability of proper facilities in terms of irrigation, dependency on monsoons aggravates its problems,
v. They continue to be employed in the primary sector because of lack of opportunities and also lack of awareness .
vi. Such a scenario , leads to stagnation and wastage of human resources.
vii. People work below their optimum capacities.
viii. This impacts employment in other sectors.
