"Albert felt the medical certificate almost burning a hole in his pocket", why does the author say this?

The author says this because Albert was short on money and yet he had spent some so that he could get a medical certificate to escape from school. When he was expelled from school without the need to produce any kind of medical reasons, it burnt " a hole in his pocket" because he had spent money on something that was entirely unnecessary.

Because albert on one hand was poor , and he has spend some money to get a medical certificate . when albert was expelled from the school he felt guilty not because of his behavior but because he has spent on such a thing that didn't prove useful to him. That is why he felt as if the medical certificate was burning a hole in his pocket.
