Hydrocolloids- Algin and carrageen are used commercially as
water holding substances
Agar produced by Gelidium is used to grow microbes and
in preparation of jellies
Unicellular algae like Spirullina are used as food
supplements
Some algae are used in fish food as they are rich in certain
amino acids like lysine and threonine which are not present in fish
meal prepared by crop plants
Also the photosynthesis carried out by algae reduces the amount
of CO2 in atmosphere

These substances produced by the algae are consumed by other
organisms only
