"all i did was smile smile and smile"..what does this line mean?

This means that the poet has pain of separation from his amma , his child fear that one day amma will be no more , But all she said that see you soon amma & poet all did is smile & smile & smile....... (this implies pain of separation )

THE PARTING WORDS OF THE POET AND HER SMILE UNDERLINE HER PAIN AND FEAR OF LOSING HER MOTHER.THE POET PUT UP A BRAVE  FRONT TO FACE HER MOTHER AND TRIED TO HIDE HER FEARS BEHIND A SMILE.HER WORDS "see you soon, amma",SUGGEST THAT SHE WAS HOPING AGAINST HOPE THAT  MOTHER LIVE ON FOR A LONG TIME.

By "smile,smile,smile" She means to make  herself and her mother hopeful to see each other  again . It is actually a painful smile . The poet tries to conceal the swelling emotions by smiling . By using the poetic device of repetition has made the poetic language rich by depicting many hidden emotions through "smile".

The poetess kamala Das undertakes her journey to cochin her mother accompanied her to the airport to bid her farewall. After the security checkup the poetess looks at her another a few yards away. The fear of separation from her mother I.e her childhood fear bounced back to her mind. This time the fragle and lifeless face of her mother makes her apprehend that she might not see her alive again when she returns. Though in wordly she is worried and vulnerable, she tries to put on a happy face to console her mother and give her assurance, she executes her smiling face with much of her efforts lacking instinct.
