All parts of the question below:

(a) CuCl is colourless in solid state but turns blue in aqueous solution, give reason.
(b) Calculate the spin only magnetic moment for Ti in T i C l 3
(c) Name two transition metal ions of first series which always form colourless compound.
(d) Give two uses of mischmetal.
(e) What are different oxidation states exhibited by lanthanoids?

Dear Student,

(a) In CuCl, Cu exists as Cu+ i.e. 3d10. Here all the electrons are paired and so it doesnot show colour.In aqueous solution, it gets converted to Cu(OH)2 i.e. Cu2+ and electronic configuration becomes 3d9. Now, one unpaired electron is present which on excitation provides colour to the solution. Hence, aqueous solution of CuCl in blue in colour. (b) Spin only magnetic moment=n(n+2)In TiCl3, Ti exists as Ti3+and has electronic configuration 3d1n=1So,  Spin only magnetic moment=1(1+2)=3=1.73(c) The ions which have no unpaired electrons will be colourless. For eg. Zn2+, Sc3+, Ti4+, etc.Kindly ask the remaining query in the next thread.
