Although Nicola and Jacopo are young boys, the author refers to them as gentlemen. Why does he do so?

“The Two Gentlemen of Verona”, by A.J. Cronin is an endearing tale of the love and affection that two brothers towards bear towards their sister. Nicolo and Jacopo are portrayed as self-sacrificing and  honest youths, who work tirelessly to gather money for their sister’s treatment. The author is amazed to find such maturity, bravery and chivalry in such young children. They do not want charity and are even hesitant about taking a lift from the author. Such characteristics are rarely found in adults, but are present in these two boys. Thus, the author calls them gentlemen, because they have the attributes of true gentlemen in them.
