However, when they started talking, they ended up fighting on trivial issues. The first issue over which they wrangled was a disputed property named Oxen Meadows. Both were under the impression that their families were the rightful owner of the property. The right place of exercising one's property rights is the court. Quarrelling like children does not resolve such issues. They then ended up quarrelling over the superiority of their dogs. Lomov claimed that his pet dog Guess was superior. However, Natalya was adamant that Squeezer, her pet dog, was superior. Pets are always dear to their owners. So, fighting over their superiority is silly. Due to their egos, their relationship suffered. Therefore, maintaining a cordial relationship is essential.

Lomov was a strange man. He went to propose Natalya but quarrelled over petty issues like the oxen meadows and pet dogs. He also abused Natalya and her father.

Natalya was a young girl of twenty five. She lived in the neighbourhood of Lomov and could do all the household work. She yearned for love and was quarrelsome by nature. She too quarrelled with Lomov over meadows and their pet dogs as to which one is a better breed.?

So, we can say that because both lomov and natalya were were short tempered and quarrelsome by nature, thus they had arguments on a petty thing too.

Natalya and lomov were neighbours . Lomov came to propose Natalya but they both get into a quarrel over the matter of who owns the meadows .
When Lomov and Natalya was engaged at beginning of the play and Lomov shares his purpose of visiting there , Natalya loses her temper. Because Lomov addressed the Oxen meadows , that touched the birch woods of Natalya's family .
Over this matter , they both get into a quarrel . The matter was a trevial one because it was just a misunderstanding , that could have been solved with good communication.
