yes because metals are are harder than non-metals it can be easily noticable .metals have thre own lusture &they are shiny accept daimond but daimond also needs polishing for get its shinyness. metals are also a good condutor accept graphit.

there are various criteria's before deciding whether an element is a metal or non-metal.there are various metals like sodium,potassium which can be cut through a knife and zinc is brittle(means likely to break when subjected to pressure).On the other hand there are also many non-metals like which can have a lustre in them.example: graphite,iodine crystals etc.
