A clause is a short sentence that contains a verb. A clause is different from a phrase because it contains a subject and a verb. The types of clauses are:

• When a sentence has a noun and a verb it is a noun clause.
• When a sentence has an adjective and verb it is a adjective clause. The sentence acts an adjective. Example - Students who are disciplined, get good marks.
• When a sentence has an adverb and verb it is a adverb clause. Example - 
  I saw the movie before I left for Kerala. Here, the last part contains an adverb as well as a verb.
• Relative clause contains a group of words that answer the questions who, whom etc. Example - The boy, who wears a jacket, is tall.
