One metal widely used in our daily life - Calcium - Calcium is a group 2 element and its common oxidation state is +2. It is electropositive in nature. It is shiny in appearance. It is malleable and ductile.

1. Calcium compounds are used as an antacid to relieve acidity in the stomach.
2. Calcium phosphate is an important element of bones and teeth.
3. It is used in making alloys and also used as reducing agent in many reactions.
4. Calcium carbonate is widely used to make cement and mortar. It is very widely used in the glass industry also.
5. Calcium compounds is also used to make toothpaste and mineral supplements.

Other important metal is iron - used in making steel, various machinery, alloys etc. It is an important element in blood also.

One non-metal without which our existence is not possible - Carbon - It is an element belonging to Group 14 and valency of 4. It can show catenation property (the property of forming a long chain with the identical atom).

1. Carbon is used as a fuel (hydrocarbons, coal, etc.)
2. One of the most precious elements on earth, diamond is also made up of carbon.
3. Graphite (one form of carbon) is used in making pencil leads.
4. It is an essential element in human body - it is an important constituent of sugar, proteins etc.
5. Cellulose, found in plants, is also made up of carbon.
