When an acid is mixed with a base, both substances neutralize each other’s effect. The reaction between an acid and a base is known as a neutralization reaction. In a neutralization reaction, salt and water are obtained as products. Also, energy is evolved during the process. The general equation for the neutralization reaction is represented as:

Acid + Base → Salt + Water

Types of Salts:

1. Neutral salt: Salt that is formed when a strong acid reacts with a strong base. These salts are neutral in nature and their pH value is equal to 7.

Example: Sodium chloride
Sodium chloride (NaCl) is formed after the reaction between hydrochloric acid (a strong acid) and sodium hydroxide (a strong base).


2. Acidic salt: Salt that is formed when a strong acid reacts with a weak base. These salts are acidic in nature and their pH value is lower than 7.


Example: Ammonium chloride
Ammonium chloride is formed after a reaction between hydrochloric acid (a strong acid) and ammonium hydroxide (a weak base).

3. Basic Salt: Salt that is formed when a strong acid reacts with a weak base. These salts are basic in nature and their pH value is more than 7.

Example: Sodium carbonate
Sodium carbonate is formed after the reaction between sodium hydroxide (a strong base) and carbonic acid (a weak base).

We can identify the nature of the different types of salts with the help of their pH values.
  • Neutral salt: The pH value of a neutral salt is almost equal to 7.
  • Acidic salt: The pH value of an acidic salt is less than 7.
  • Basic salt: The pH value of a basic salt is more than 7.
