Answer the following with reference to a mammalian heart:
a) Atrial systole
b) Ventricular systole
c) What is stroke volume and cardiac output?

Dear Student

(a) Atrial systole is the contraction of left and right atria causing forcing of blood to ventricles. It takes 0.1 seconds.

(b) Ventricular systole is the ejection of 80-100cm3 of blood from the ventricles introduced by a brief period of contraction. It lasts for about 0.3 to 0.4 seconds.

(c) Stroke volume: Amount of blood pumped by the left ventricle of the heart in one contraction.

(d) Cardiac output: It is the amount of blood being pumped by the heart by the right or left ventricle in the time interval of one minute.
