Answer the question...

Dear Student,

The solutions to your question 2 a and b have been provided below:

a) The peddler wrote that Elda had treated her nicely all throughout the day, as if he was a captain. Now, he wants to be nice to her and doesn't want her to be embarrassed during this Christmas season. He mentions that he has left the stolen money behind. He wants Elda to return the money to the the old man. The peddler mentions that the rat trap is a Christmas present for Elda, as it was because of Elda's kindness and compassion that the peddler is now a changed man.

b) The peddler was welcomed by the cottage owner. The cottage owner was a lonely man, thus the company of the peddler brought happiness  in his life. The cottage owner was happy to get someone to talk to in his loneliness.
The cottage owner had received thirty kronor in payment, which he hung on a nail on the window frame. The peddler stole the money from the cottage owner. He then went into the forest to avoid detection but got lost in the woods. In this way the peddler betrayed the trust of the cottage owner.
