Dear student,
Straws actually employ the capillary action as a result of the pressure difference. When a person drinks or "sucks" through a straw it creates a vacuum inside the straw hence the pressure inside the straw decreases while the same atmospheric pressure is acting on the surface of the soft drink outside. Eventually, a pressure difference is created outside and inside the straw, so the soft drink conveniently rises in the straw.
