Are Agar Agar and Agarose different?

Dear student, Agar or agar-agar is gelatinous polysaccharide produced by certain members of red algae such as Gracilaria and Gelidium. It is used as a solidifying agent in the preparation of growth media for growing various microorganisms and plants during tissue culture. In the food industry it is used in place of gelatin in the preparation of ice creams and jellies. Agarose is a polysaccharide derived from agar. It is used in the preparation of a gel matrix for the separation of DNA by a process called electrophoresis. Regards
