Are eggs, oocyte and ovum the same ? If not, then what is the difference?

Dear Student,

1) Oocyte can be

PRIMARY OOCYTE  :-

One cell of the egg nest enlarges and forms the primary oocyte while other forms a layer of follicular epitelium around the primary oocyte. The primary oocyte along with follicular epithelium is known as primary follicle.

SECONDARY OOCYTE  :-

It is also known as secondary follicle because primary follicle changes into secondary follicle when surrounded by several layers of granulosa cells and a new theca. It is formed inside the ovaries. Formed as a result of first meiotic division of primary oocyte. It is formed before ovulation.

 2) Ovum
It is the female gamete in humans. It is formed inside the fallopian tube. Formed when the sperm enters the secondary oocyte. It is formed after ovulation. It is immotile.

3) Egg - It is fertilised product between the ovum (female gamete) and sperm (male gamete) which results in the formation of zygote.
