ANIMAL SAFETY:OUR RESPONSIBILITY

As I am sure that many of you saw on Komo News 4, a grisly bear and her cubs attacked people in the Yellowstone National Park on July 27th. Although this did not happen in our area we do need to address this sad event in here in Tacoma. The reason is that we are also very close to wild areas where bears roam and we have seen pictures of bears in our neighboring cities in the last month. As human beings it is our responsibility to take safety measures when we live in bear country or near bear county. This can range from keeping our pets in doors at night and when we know that there are wild animals in the area to not camping in areas that we know that there are dangerous animals such as bears. It is not the bears fault that we put our homes, tents, towns, and pets in their territories and it is vital that we keep in mind that the wild animals do not know what animals its ok to hunt and eat and which ones are not ok. Dont forget that we humans are also animals and with no fur, tough skin, claws, or defensive teeth, we are easy prey!

Even here in Tacoma we need to make sure that we are taking measures to take care of our pets, our families, our properties, and the wild life.

Please remember to be mindful of cats, raccoons, possums, squirrels and other such small animals that may be crossing or trying to cross the roads through out the Pudget Sound area and all other areas. Keep in mind that we are not to far from the wilderness. As a matter of fact, just the other day I was in Spanaway near Wal Mart and saw a small group of deer near the old rail road tracks not to far from Pacific Ave. Whats more disturbing is that I often drive down Yakima in Tacoma from Spanaway to the down town area and every day I see animals that have been hit by cars up and down the road way. People are speeding and not paying attention to what they are doing on this road and not paying attention, this puts you, your family, your pets, and the wild life in the area.

When you are visiting our parks or camping in our area please remember that there are bear in the area as well as other wild animals. Remember to keep your food and pets in safe places and keep your pets on a leash while in these areas. We are animals too and wild animals are not going to be thinking about the fact that they shouldnt eat you or your pets and loved ones. Its not because the animal is wild or bad, its just their nature to hunt and provide for themselves and their babies.

Make smart choices and be mindful of what your doing and where you are!
