Total time duration of the test = $1 \frac{1}{2} h r = \frac{1 \times 2 + 1}{2} h r = \frac{2 + 1}{2} h r = \frac{3}{2} h r$

Time taken by Ashu to finish the test = $1 \frac{1}{6} h r = \frac{1 \times 6 + 1}{6} h r = \frac{6 + 1}{6} h r = \frac{7}{6} h r$

Remaining time for the completion of the test

= Total time duration of the test – Time taken by Ashu to finish the test

$= \frac{3}{2} h r - \frac{7}{6} h r = (\frac{3 \times 3 - 7 \times 1}{6}) h r (L C M o f 2 a n d 6 = 6) = (\frac{9 - 7}{6}) h r = \frac{2}{6} h r = \frac{1}{3} h r$

Thus, Ashu finished the test $\frac{1}{3}$ hr before the allotted time of the test.
