At least one element in its highest possible oxidation state is present in which of the following?
(a) ClO3- (b) NO2- (c) F2 (d) XeF6

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

Oxidation state for the elements in the different compounds:
a. ClO3-

For O, -2
For Cl,  Cl + (3 X -2) = -1   Therefore, Cl = +5
Highest oxidation state of Cl is +7 in ClO4-

  1.  NO2
        O = -2
        For N,   N + (2 X -2) = -1  Therefore, N = +3
        Highest oxidation state of N is +5 in NO3-

  1. F2, has F as 0
  2. XeF6

         F=-1
         Therefore, Xe = +6. This is the highest oxidation state of Xe

    Answer is (d) XeP6
