Balance the following redox reaction by ion electron reaction Step by step..

Dear Student,
We have to balance the equation FeCl3 + H2 FeCl2 + HCl + S by ion-electron method

Oxidation half reaction: H2  S + 2H+ + 2e-
(H atoms are balanced by H+ and since oxidation is loss of electron, electrons are added on product side)

Reduction half reaction: [Fe+3 + e  Fe+2 ] x 2
(Reduction is gain of electron since the difference in charge is 1, the electron is added to left hand side)
It is multipled by 2 to cancel the electrons in overall reaction
Cl- is not mentioned in electron half reaction since its oxidation state remains unchanged.

Overall reaction: 2 Fe+3 + H2 2 Fe+2 + S + 2H+

With the spectator ions (Cl-) the overall balanced equation is
2FeCl3 + H2 2 FeCl2 + S + 2 HCl

Dear student,

Reduction half reaction:

H2S → S

First balance H+ in above reaction so eq. will be,

H2S → 2 H+ S

Now balance the number of electrons,

H2S → 2 H+ S + 2e- ………… (1)

Oxidation half reaction:

Fe3+ → Fe2+

Balance the number of electrons as no hydrogen & oxygen present in this eq.

Fe3+ + e- → Fe2+      …………. (2)

Multiply eq. (2) by 2

H2S → 2 H+ S + 2e-        …… 2ewill get cancelled.

2Fe3+ + 2e- → 2Fe2+

 2FeCl3 + H2S → 2FeCl+ 2HCl + S
