Balance the following redox reaction by ion electron reaction Step by step..
Dear Student,
We have to balance the equation FeCl3 + H2S FeCl2 + HCl + S by ion-electron method
Oxidation half reaction: H2S S + 2H+ + 2e-
(H atoms are balanced by H+ and since oxidation is loss of electron, electrons are added on product side)
Reduction half reaction: [Fe+3 + e Fe+2 ] x 2
(Reduction is gain of electron since the difference in charge is 1, the electron is added to left hand side)
It is multipled by 2 to cancel the electrons in overall reaction
Cl- is not mentioned in electron half reaction since its oxidation state remains unchanged.
Overall reaction: 2 Fe+3 + H2S 2 Fe+2 + S + 2H+
With the spectator ions (Cl-) the overall balanced equation is
2FeCl3 + H2S 2 FeCl2 + S + 2 HCl
Regards
