While he held his breath, no oxygen was entering the lungs. His body needed to respire for the energy. Therefore he breathed heavily to get the required amount of oxygen.

This is because when a person holds their breath, every unit of oxygen gets used up and the lungs get full of carbon dioxide.
The body tries to expel the gas and finally, when it does so, the cells and the body are completely devoid of energy and oxygen and therefore there is an apparent need for a lungful of oxygenated air.
To provide this to the body, the individual has to undergo heavy breathing.
