Maxwell decided to choose an otter as a pet because he became very lonely after his pet dog died. His friend suggested that he should get one from the Marshes along river Tigris in Iraq. The otter was brought to him in a sack with two Arabs and a note. The otter was covered in mud to an extent that it took almost a month of cleaning and washing to reveal his actual color.
