Briefly explain sex determination in drosophila.

The fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster contain 8 chromosomes in which 3 pairs are autosomes and one pair of sex chromosome. It inherits one set of autosome (haploid) and one sex chromosome from each parent. The representation of chromosomes in Drosophila is same as in humans, XX in females and XY in males, but in this case Y does not represent maleness in fruitfly. The determination of sex determination is determined by the ratio of sex chromosome : autosome ( X: A). This is called as genic balance system.
