bring out the irony of the poem 'the rime of the ancient mariner'

The Rime of the Ancient MarinerThe Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Irony is a figure of speech where the intended meaning of the words is different from the actual meaning of the words. It may also be a situation that may end up in quite a different way than what is generally anticipated. In simple words, it is a difference between the appearance and the reality.
If we look at the poem, 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' we find that there is a lot of irony in the following lines,
“Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.”
Here we see that the ship, blown by the south wind, is stranded on the sea. Water can be seen everywhere but the sailors do not have a single drop of water to drink. This is a very ironical situation.
