calculate the normality of a solution containing 5g NaOH in 450 ml solution.

Normality = No. of equivalents / Volume of solution (L)

No. of equivalents = Mass / Equivalent mass

Equivalent  weight or mass = Molar mass / n-factor
n-factor for NaOH = 1
Equivalent weight = Molar mass

No. of equivalents = 5/40 = 1/8 equivalents

Normality = (1/8) /0.450 = 0.2777 N or 5/18 N

  • 8

moles of NaOH =5/40=1/8moles

molarity=(1/8)*1000/450= 5/18

normality=molarity*n factor (which is 1 for NaOH)

normality=5/18
