can any 1 tell me the difference between transitive and intransitive verb!!

Hello,

@Arpita, your friend Pradeep has very well answered your query. Hope that helped. Here is a brief explanation to differentiate between transitive and intransitive verbs:

A transitive verb is a verb that denotes an action which passes over from the doer or subject to an object.

Example: The mother fed the baby;

He filled up the form;

They enjoyed the party, etc.

An intransitive verb denotes an action which does not pass over to an object, or which expresses a state or being, such as:

He ran a long distance;

The balloon burst in the sky;

Please keep quiet, etc.

A matter needs to be noted here that most verbs can be used both as transitive and as intransitive verbs. It is, therefore, better to say that a verb is used transitively or intransitively rather than that it is transitive or intransitive.

@Pradeep, nice answer. Keep it up!

 "Trans" means to carry. "In" as a prefix means "not".

Transitive verb has to "carry" the action from the subject to the complement (the completer of the sentence.)

Susie jumped -- verb is "jumped" It's IN-transitive, because it's just what she did. She "jumped"

If the sentence said, "She jumped over the fence", then "jumped" is still intransitive, because "over the fence" is a prepostional phrase, and not part of the basic structure of the sentence. It's almost impossible to understand, since English teachers had to quit taking time to diagram sentences, because that made it so easy to understand, but we had to "move on". I never got over it.

 Verbs can be classified as transitive or intransitive.

A transitive verb requires both a subject and an object.

i.e. I gave you the doll. (doll is the direct object of “gave” and “you”)

Without a direct object, the meaning of a transitive verb is unclear.

 Incomplete: The boy held. (What did the boy hold?)

 Complete: The boy held the owl.

An intransitive verb cannot take an object.

i.e. The child will nap until 2:00. (Nap is an intransitive verb, and thesentence has no object.)
