Can someone tell me the difference between past perfect tense and simple past tense.

Dear student,

Here is the answer:

a) Simple past tense:
  • Simple past tense talks about the events or happenings that happened in the past.
  • The most common words used with simple past tense are last week, yesterday, two months ago etc.
  • The verbs in simple past tense are formed by adding  -d or -ed, such as walked or played. Some irregular verbs change in a different manner in simple past tense. For example the word  'go' becomes 'went' in simple past tense.
Examples of simple past tense:
  1. I went to the market.
  2. She waited at the bus stop.

b) Past perfect tense :
  •  This is used to talk about the actions which were completed in the past at some point in the past. For example : She had eaten her breakfast.
  •  It also talks about something which happened before something else. For example : She had finished her breakfast before the bus arrived.
  •  Past perfect tense is also used to express condition. For example : If I had known that she would come, I would have made arrangements.
  •  We use had + past participle of the verb.
Examples of Past perfect tense:
  1. She had met her before the interview.
  2. The train had left before I reached the station.

These two tenses are both used to talk about things that happened in the past. However we use past perfect to talk about something that happened before another action in the past, which is usually expressed by the past simple. For example: ... The first two questions should remind you when we use each tense.
