Can tube light work on battery

Dear Student,
A tube light is not connected in the supply main directly. Although it operates at 230 V, 50 Hz, some auxiliary electrical components are used to insert in this installation to support the tube light operational principle. We use Choke: it is electromagnetic ballast or electronic ballast The function of choke is to provide high voltage enough for ionization to take place in a tube light and after establishment and substenance of ionization, limit the voltage across the tube. That is the reason why a tube fuses when the choke is shorted. In order to limit the current to a safe value choke is used .
Choke performs two function
1) providing ignition voltage
2) limiting the current
So, a tubelight can not work on battery without using a choke.
