The correct term is diapause.
Diapause is a stage of suspended development to cope with unfavourable conditions. Many species of Zooplankton and insects exhibit diapause to tide over adverse climatic conditions during their development.

Suspended development means when growth is stopped for some time and only necessary metabolic processes like respiration, circulation, digestion etc take place but that too at slow rate.
